“This book is an act of love towards jazz and its makers, a testimony of the passion that drives Roberto Cifarelli, for years a constant presence in clubs, concert halls, festivals and every other place where this music can be heard.”
“In the end, the photographs and their layout make up a true family album, where the friends and relatives near and far are the musicians, who seal their photographic presence with a thought, a story, a comment, a testimony.”
“This attitude also reveals the character of this work and the personality of the man who made it: a man able to live his passion as a true citizen of the musical world, not as an occasional, snobbish listener, and for this reason he represents the best part of the audience.”
Maurizio Franco
“For it seems undeniable that he chose to take his photographs almost only at the moment when the musicians stepped into the stage role that this part requires and thus became other than themselves, possessed by the demon of music.”
“But Cifarelli shapes his images with much more freedom than the technical means sometimes allow; or rather, he skilfully uses the possibilities that the most modern technology offers the photographer, and so exploits every resource of the ambient light when he wants to give us images that are more descriptive than interpretative.”
“In this way the images bend to the will of the narrator, and the ternary structure chosen for the layout of the book (three images sum up the personality of each figure), the stylistic idea of placing next to each musician a reproduction of his autograph, and the arrangement of the photographs as diptychs all show the intent to give the reading a regular rhythm (almost a melodic line), which marks the whole book and helps to suggest a meaning added to the single photographs.”
“Roberto Cifarelli, in short, has not offered us an ordinary photo book on jazz, but has tried to bring the rhythm and improvisation of jazz into his images.
We could even say that he has tried to make photographic jazz.”
Massimo Mussini
